Branch sets up fund to pay hardships payments to members who take action

Today (27/10/11) the Branch Committee agreed to establish an Industrial Action Fund and made £75000 available to issue hardship payments to members who suffer hardship as a result of strike action on the 30th November.

Members who feel they are in hardship as a direct result of loosing pay should apply to the Branch for a Hardship Payment. Payments will be made up to a maximum of £50 per member and will not exceed the total pay deducted.

This will be after the action takes place and members will also need to provide a copy of their payslip to demonstrate the loss of pay resulting from the Strike.

Members are reminded that if they suffer hardship for any reason can always seek help from UNISON Welfare. Our Welfare Officer is Lin Thomas.

The Branch Committee also looked in more detail at plans for the 30th November including the possibility of a local rally along with picket lines, etc.

Branch Committee meets on the last Thursday of every month at 10am in the Joint Union Office on the 5th Floor of the Old QE Hospital.

Branch Committee hears update on the New Hospital ahead of Phase 2 Move

October's Branch Committee was updated by Branch Secretary, Sharon Otto on issues relating to the New Hospital, including the significant changes to ward allocations.

The Committee heard how the changes had affected the ongoing organisational change affecting ward based nurses in bands 2-5, and rather then starting the preference process again UNISON and the RCN had agreed a simple process to ensure it is fair on those affected.  Likewise the changes will affect some Nurses at Bands 6-7 as well as other ward linked staff such as A&C will need to be worked through between the joint unions and the Trust.

With the Phase 2 move about to happen we are keen to hear from UNISON members about their experiences, any problems you are having and any issues that need to be addressed.  Please get in touch with Sharon Otto or James Anthony with any general concerns and Branch Health & Safety Officer Bob Shakeshaft for any Health and Safety issues.

The Committee also looked at the Newsletter that was recently sent out to members, we would welcome any feedback that you have and any suggestions for what you would like to see in the winter addition.

With the new year nearly upon us the Committee also considered the Branch AGM after our highly successful event last year.  The committee decided once again hold it over a lunch time to help members attend, hold it on site, and invite interesting speakers looking at the massive issues facing health workers like us.

The Committee also appointed delegates from the Branch to attend UNISON's Black Members Conference and Women's Conference next year; noted the response from Centro to the issues with buses since the new hospital opened; and discussed a number of policies and procedures that the trust are consulting on.

Branch Committee meets on the last Thursday of every month at 10am in the Joint Union Office at Selly Oak Hospital.

Branch makes donation in aid of Pakistan Floods and calls upon members for support

Today's (26/08/10) Branch Committee agreed to a donation from the Branch's funds of £200 to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to aid their relief efforts in Pakistan after the devastating floods there. This is in addition to the £10 000 already donated by UNISON's National Executive to the Disasters Emergency Committee.  The affects of the floods have been devastating, and have affected million of people.  The response of the British people has as always been excellent, and we know that times are hard, but we call upon all our members to give what they can.

The Branch Committee also agreed plans for recruitment through the rest of this year including walk arounds in the day and at night as well as a stall to distribute diaries to members and sign new members up.

Our response to a consultation on UNISON's response to issues on pay and pensions was worked on, including what sort of action our members might be willing to take. If you have any views on this please contact the Branch Chair.

The arrangements for Ed Miliband's visit to the Branch were also agreed, and members are encouraged to attend.

Branch Committee meets on the last Thursday of every month at 10am in the Joint Union Office at Selly Oak Hospital.

However due to leave there will be NO MEETING in September.

Whitepaper sparks concerns for the future of the NHS at Branch Committee meeting

ilovenhsToday (29/07/10) the Branch Committee heard about major concerns about the Government's white paper Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS. Sounds like a nice titled but the danger is that it could be as liberating as a lethal injection to the NHS we all care about. Under its proposals the NHS will become little more than a logo, with GPs calling the shots locally and commissioning services often from the private sector.  For those that get to stay within the NHS, our terms and conditions could be slashed and pay determined locally which will only make things worse not better.  Sharon Otto, Branch Secretary will be attending a special meeting in the Regional Office to hear more about the proposals for UNISON's Head of Health Karen Jennings and look at how we respond. This will be fed back to the Branch.

It was also agreed that as there had been concerns raised by a number of members about changes to local bus services, and specifically the withdrawal of the 21, that we would support work being done by the West Midlands Campaign for Better Transport. There is a petition that is being circulated by reps. Please get in touch for a copy.

It was also agreed to send members who work as Nursing Auxiliaries to UNISON's Healthcare Assistants' Conference on the 21st September. For details contact the Branch Secretary.

The Branch also agreed to nominate Graham Smith for the Young Members Seat and Carol Sewell for the West Midlands (female) seat in the National Executive Council by-elections.

Branch Committee meets on the last Thursday of every month at 10am in the Joint Union Office at Selly Oak Hospital. For more information contact James Anthony, Branch Chair

Branch Committee hears of New Hospitals issues and members worries about the budget

UHB UNISON's Branch Committee heard feedback from our reps in departments across the Trust on the new hospital issues. These include issues with the supply of medicines, problems switchboard and people not knowing extension numbers, problems with lifts, flooding issues in the basement, staff with different working practices that have not been brought together, and staff facilities such as fridges being inadequate. Working with partner unions we are compiling a list of issues to take forward with the New Hospital Team and senior managers.

Of most immediate concern are issues that porters are facing, with not enough staff to cover the large site and a feeling that the organisation has completely fallen appart. Portering is a vital service which means patients and materials get to the right place at the right time and members in portering and clinical staff are concerned that patient care is being affected.

Branch Secretary, Sharon Otto has contacted the appropriate manager to seek urgent resolution, and has made sure the the appropriate Trust Executives are aware.  We also want the workforce levels reviewed so that there are enough staff for the future and for the there to be a meeting so that managers can hear straight from the staff affected.

Roger-Godsiff-MP-001The meeting also heard from Labour MP for Birmingham Hall Roger Godsiff and had a very interesting discussion about the election and the way forward for public services.  Roger told the committee that he is keen to support us on any issues we have, and having been a Trade Union Official decribed himself very much as a 'union man'.

The meeting also heard of the announcements in the Budget that pay for those earning above £21000 in the public sector would have their pay frozen (and it is not yet clear whether this includes increments), that our pensions are going to be reviewed which is likely to lead to an attack on the final salary scheme, and that for current and future pensions once you retire it would only go up by CPI not RPI (as CPI tends to be lower).

Branch Committee meets on the last Thursday of every month at 10am in the Joint Union Office at Selly Oak Hospital. For more information contact James Anthony, Branch Chair
