Branch makes donation in aid of Pakistan Floods and calls upon members for support

Today's (26/08/10) Branch Committee agreed to a donation from the Branch's funds of £200 to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to aid their relief efforts in Pakistan after the devastating floods there. This is in addition to the £10 000 already donated by UNISON's National Executive to the Disasters Emergency Committee.  The affects of the floods have been devastating, and have affected million of people.  The response of the British people has as always been excellent, and we know that times are hard, but we call upon all our members to give what they can.

The Branch Committee also agreed plans for recruitment through the rest of this year including walk arounds in the day and at night as well as a stall to distribute diaries to members and sign new members up.

Our response to a consultation on UNISON's response to issues on pay and pensions was worked on, including what sort of action our members might be willing to take. If you have any views on this please contact the Branch Chair.

The arrangements for Ed Miliband's visit to the Branch were also agreed, and members are encouraged to attend.

Branch Committee meets on the last Thursday of every month at 10am in the Joint Union Office at Selly Oak Hospital.

However due to leave there will be NO MEETING in September.

Whitepaper sparks concerns for the future of the NHS at Branch Committee meeting

ilovenhsToday (29/07/10) the Branch Committee heard about major concerns about the Government's white paper Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS. Sounds like a nice titled but the danger is that it could be as liberating as a lethal injection to the NHS we all care about. Under its proposals the NHS will become little more than a logo, with GPs calling the shots locally and commissioning services often from the private sector.  For those that get to stay within the NHS, our terms and conditions could be slashed and pay determined locally which will only make things worse not better.  Sharon Otto, Branch Secretary will be attending a special meeting in the Regional Office to hear more about the proposals for UNISON's Head of Health Karen Jennings and look at how we respond. This will be fed back to the Branch.

It was also agreed that as there had been concerns raised by a number of members about changes to local bus services, and specifically the withdrawal of the 21, that we would support work being done by the West Midlands Campaign for Better Transport. There is a petition that is being circulated by reps. Please get in touch for a copy.

It was also agreed to send members who work as Nursing Auxiliaries to UNISON's Healthcare Assistants' Conference on the 21st September. For details contact the Branch Secretary.

The Branch also agreed to nominate Graham Smith for the Young Members Seat and Carol Sewell for the West Midlands (female) seat in the National Executive Council by-elections.

Branch Committee hears of New Hospitals issues and members worries about the budget

UHB UNISON's Branch Committee heard feedback from our reps in departments across the Trust on the new hospital issues. These include issues with the supply of medicines, problems switchboard and people not knowing extension numbers, problems with lifts, flooding issues in the basement, staff with different working practices that have not been brought together, and staff facilities such as fridges being inadequate. Working with partner unions we are compiling a list of issues to take forward with the New Hospital Team and senior managers.

Of most immediate concern are issues that porters are facing, with not enough staff to cover the large site and a feeling that the organisation has completely fallen appart. Portering is a vital service which means patients and materials get to the right place at the right time and members in portering and clinical staff are concerned that patient care is being affected.

Branch Secretary, Sharon Otto has contacted the appropriate manager to seek urgent resolution, and has made sure the the appropriate Trust Executives are aware.  We also want the workforce levels reviewed so that there are enough staff for the future and for the there to be a meeting so that managers can hear straight from the staff affected.

Roger-Godsiff-MP-001The meeting also heard from Labour MP for Birmingham Hall Roger Godsiff and had a very interesting discussion about the election and the way forward for public services.  Roger told the committee that he is keen to support us on any issues we have, and having been a Trade Union Official decribed himself very much as a 'union man'.

The meeting also heard of the announcements in the Budget that pay for those earning above £21000 in the public sector would have their pay frozen (and it is not yet clear whether this includes increments), that our pensions are going to be reviewed which is likely to lead to an attack on the final salary scheme, and that for current and future pensions once you retire it would only go up by CPI not RPI (as CPI tends to be lower).

Branch fears for the future with new coalition Government

Today (27/05/10) UHB UNISON's Branch Committee expressed concerns for the future due to the election of the coalition Conservative/Liberal Democrat Coalition (or the ConDems), especially with recent announcements of £6billion worth of cuts in public services.

While the NHS budget has been ring fenced, the high increase in the cost of healthcare means that cuts will be made in order to meet those costs.  It is particularly worrying that both the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats want to freeze public sector pay and attack our pensions.

mvps_graphic5pix_rgbThe Branch Committee resolved to make sure we build a good relationship with our local MPs and welcomed the election of Labour MPs in our local constituencies of Edgbaston, Selly Oak, Northfeild and Hall Green. The committee decided to write to these MPs to congratulate them, encourage them to support UNISON's Million Voices for Public Services campaign, and invite them to come along and meet members of the branch to hear experiences from the shop floor of the NHS.

The committee heard how members in the old pension scheme (1995 scheme) would be given the choice to move into the new scheme (2008 scheme which new starters since then are already on).  Personalised information packs will be given to all members of the old pension scheme so they can make an informed choice, this will be coming out for the 50 and overs around July this year and for other staff it will be spring next year.

The Branch Committee also discussed what content should be in a future newsletter to keep members up to date with local issues, and future recruitment activity as well as support for recruiting more

Concerns were also raised about car parking, particularly at the QE site as well as for the New Hospital and these will be raised through staff side colleagues.

Branch Committee hears of members anger over Special Leave procedure

Branch Committee today (25/03/10) heard of from reps about members being given the wrong interpretation of the new Special Leave procedure which resulted from the wrong version being published on the intranet.

Staff have been told that they will need to make time up or use annual leave for hospital appointments, but this is not the case.   The Joint Unions, including UNISON, have negotiated and agreed a new procedure, appointments should be made where possible at the beginning or end of the day to reduce disruption and staff with flexible working arrangements should acommodate the appointment that way.

After the Branch Committee Sharon Otto, UNISON Branch Secretary, met with the appropriate HR Manager to clarify the situation and communication will be going out to managers today to ensure they follow the correct interpretation.

The Branch agreed that as a health service employer it is important that the trust supports the health of it's own staff.

The Branch also agreed our recruitment events for the year, looking at what activities will be needed when we move to the new hospital.

The Branch agreed a number of nominations for Regional UNISON positions as well as positions within the Joint Unions here at UHB.

Branch Committee meets on the last Thursday of every month at 10am in the Joint Union Office at Selly Oak Hospital. For more information contact James Anthony, Branch Chair
