Can I bring my kids along?

Please do! Most schools will be closed on that day anyway. Please bring them and we'll have flags and whistles to keep them entertained.

What should I wear?

Wear sensible clothes for the weather and comfortable shoes.  UHB Trust has said that staff should not wear their uniform if on strike.  UNISON will be providing green ponchos on the day.

Who else is on strike?

At the hospital staff with be joining us on strike from the Charatered Society of Physiotherapists, the Society of Radiographers, the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists and Unite.  Across the public sector there are 20 unions taking part including school, libraries, bin collection, street cleaning, housing, benefits, tax collection, job centres, colleges and universities, police staff, social services, and more.

Will I loose pay?

The Trust will be taking pay of staff for the hours they would have worked. We have strongly argued that this is unfair and the Trust should follow many other employers and only deduct 1/7th of your weekly pay. However the information the Trust has put out on hourly pay rates is not what you would loose from your salary as the tax/NI etc would also me reduced.

What if I'm in hardship as a result of the action?

The Branch has established a fund to issue hardship payment. For more details contact James Anthony

I'm worried about my patients if I go on strike

UNISON is working with the other unions and the Trust to make sure that there is 'emergency cover' to ensure patients are not put at risk.  This may mean some UNISON members will be exempt from taking action, however unless you receive an exemption you should take strike action.

I'm a registered professional (such as Nurse, OT, Pharmacist) am I able to take strike action?

Yes, you have as much right to take industrial action as anyone else.  In fact the NMC has issued a statement that taking strike action does not breach the Code of Conduct. This should be the same for the other regulators.

Will I be treated differently if I go on strike?

In their information to staff the Trust have stated 'The Trust accepts your decision to strike and you will not suffer any detriment in the way you are treated as a result'

Branch sets up fund to pay hardships payments to members who take action

E-mail Print PDF

Today (27/10/11) the Branch Committee agreed to establish an Industrial Action Fund and made £75000 available to issue hardship payments to members who suffer hardship as a result of strike action on the 30th November.

Members who feel they are in hardship as a direct result of loosing pay should apply to the Branch for a Hardship Payment. Payments will be made up to a maximum of £50 per member and will not exceed the total pay deducted.

This will be after the action takes place and members will also need to provide a copy of their payslip to demonstrate the loss of pay resulting from the Strike.

Members are reminded that if they suffer hardship for any reason can always seek help from UNISON Welfare. Our Welfare Officer is Lin Thomas.

The Branch Committee also looked in more detail at plans for the 30th November including the possibility of a local rally along with picket lines, etc.

Branch Committee meets on the last Thursday of every month at 10am in the Joint Union Office on the 5th Floor of the Old QE Hospital.

Increments Safe for now - UNISON holds off unfair proposals

E-mail Print PDF

Working together with the other unions at the Trust, UNISON's negotiaters have effectively defended the Agenda for Change agreement.

After all the unions rejected proposals to stop pay progression for staff due to issues such as sickness absence or disciplinary penalties, the Trust had been set to impose these changes from the 1st September leading to significant conflict with unions and staff.

However in a letter signed today by Tim Jones, Executive Director for Delivery and UNISON Branch Secretary Sharon Otto, as Chair of Staff Side, these proposals are now on hold.

This follows from the Trust Partnership Team meeting (where elected Staff Side reps meet with the Trust's senior management to negotiate and consult) last Wednesday.  The Trust agreed with UNISON and other unions that in relation to stopping increments for sickness absence, disciplinary action, or where staff are being performance managed that this cannot be looked at until the legal position on this is clarified as there is currently a similar case going to Employment Tribunal.  In the ET, UNISON along with other unions are taking cases against a Trust in the North West who implimented similar proposals that we believe breach the Agenda for Change agreement.

UNISON remains opposed to these proposals and welcomes the Trust's approach in allowing more time for consideration about these significant proposals.

The unions did agree to have discussion on defering pay progression, but are clear that is can be only where it is allowed for in the national A4C agreement. UNISON will be consulting with members before anything is agreed.

This is an important victory and shows the strength of local unions working together.
